History of the Encore Singers

1991 – The Triangle IBM Club Chorale was created in January by director Chuck Petersen. Our original president was Priscilla Driskill, assisted by vice president Wendy Toh. We practiced that season in the Grace Lutheran Church on Six Forks Road under the direction of Chuck Petersen. Our first performance was at Capital Towers Retirement Community on Six Forks Road. The grand opening was at Peace College. The theme was On Broadway.

Fall 1991 – Christmas included a performance at Peace College, the Governor's Mansion, and the IBM Rec Center. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Spring 1992 – New Board members were elected: president Fred Lofton and vice president Tom Link. Our musical theme was Return to Broadway. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Fall 1992 – Christmas included a performance at Peace College, the Governor's Mansion, and the IBM family day. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Spring 1993 – New Board members were elected: president Tom Powell and vice president Barbara Sawyer. Our musical theme was From This Moment On. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Fall 1993 – Christmas included a performance at the Governor's Mansion and the IBM family day. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Spring 1994 – New Board members were elected: president Barbara Sawyer and vice president Tim Parrott. Our musical theme was They're Playing Our Song. TICC was directed by Tom Powell and Kim Bentley.

Fall 1994 – Christmas included a performance at the Raleigh Tree Lighting. TICC was directed by Tom Powell.

Spring 1995 – Board members were elected: president Barbara Sawyer and vice president Stephen Clos. Our musical theme was Let Me Entertain You. TICC was directed by Tom Powell and Chuck Petersen.

Fall 1995 – Christmas included a performance at the Governor's Mansion, and the Governor's Tree Lighting Ceremony. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Spring 1996 – Board members were elected: president Tom Link, vice president Brenda Buffaloe, secretary-treasurer Amelia Banks, and member-at-large Leslie Heavey. Our musical theme was Music, Made in the U.S.A. TICC was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Fall 1996 – Performances included singing on the steps of the State Capitol. TICC was directed by Lisa Schenkewitz.

Spring 1997 – Board members were elected: president Stephen Clos, vice president Steve Reel, secretary-treasurer Leslie Heavey, and member-at-large Donna Reel. Performances included Peace College and various other locations. TICC was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 1997 – Performances included Raleigh Correctional Center for Women, Glenaire, and various other locations. TICC was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 1998 – Board members were elected: president Wendy Toh, vice president Leslie Heavey, and secretary-treasurer Leann Nesbitt. Performances included various locations. TICC was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 1998 – Performances included Raleigh Correctional Center for Women, Glenaire, and various other locations. Our musical theme was An Evening in December. TICC was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 1999 – The Triangle IBM Club Chorale did not perform this season. Wendy Toh continues as president. Tom Link steps in to be secretary.

Fall 1999 – The Triangle IBM Club Chorale is renamed to the Encore Singers. This season was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Spring 2000 – Our musical theme was Music Magic from Stage to Screen. Our Benefit Performance for the Town of Princeville was held at Glenaire on August 25, 2000. This season was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Summer 2000 – The Encore Singers appeared at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

Fall 2000 – The Encore Singers appeared at Cary Towne Center, the Governor's Mansion, and other locations.This season was directed by Chuck Petersen.

Spring 2001 – We were saddened by the death of director Chuck Petersen on January 23. Barbara Sawyer stepped in as director so we could complete our season.

Fall 2001 – Our first rehearsal was scheduled to be held on September 11. We postponed when terrorist attacks destroyed the World Trade Center in N.Y. Director Terry Denny was featured in the Cary News. They also did a story on us.

Spring 2002 – Our musical theme On Broadway was reflected in songs by Rogers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and others. Most of the board from the last few years continued: Tom Link as president, Susan Black as vice president, Wendy Toh as treasurer, and Lynne Wood as librarian. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 2002 – Now and Forever Christmas was our musical theme and also a new number we added this year. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2003 – Music, Made in the U.S.A. was our musical tribute to all American music. Leslie Heavey is elected as president. Tom link stays on as vice president, Tasha Dyson becomes treasurer, and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 2003 – On This Winter Holiday was our musical theme. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2004 – WENC: Encore Radio was our musical theme. We performed music from the 1940's and we even presented a short radio drama. Elections are held, but all the current board members stay in their 2003 roles for 2004. Leslie Heavey is president. Tom link stays on as vice president, Tasha Dyson remains treasurer, and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 2004 – It's Christmas and All of That Jazz was our musical theme. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2005 – Rock and Roll Party was our musical theme. Elections are held, but all the current board members stay in their 2004 roles for 2005. Leslie Heavey is president. Tom Link stays on as vice president, Tasha Dyson remains treasurer, and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 2005 – A Christmas Portrait was our musical theme. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2006 – Let’s Go to the Movies was our musical theme. Elections were held on January 31, and Stephen Clos was elected vice president for 2006. Leslie Heavey remains as president, Tasha Dyson remains treasurer, and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 2006 – Sing We Now of Christmas was our musical theme. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2007 – The Magic of Broadway is our musical theme. Elections were held on January 30, and all board positions remain the same. Leslie Heavey remains as president, Stephen Clos is vice president, Tasha Dyson remains treasurer, and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian. This season was directed by Terry Denny.

Fall 2007 - Here We Come A-Caroling was our musical theme The season was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2008 - Our musical theme this season was American Pops Forever and was directed by Terry Denny. Elections were held in January and all board positions remain the same. Leslie Heavey remains as president, Stephen Clos as vice president, Tasha Dyson remains treasurer, and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian.

Fall 2008 - Come Celebrate Christmas was our musical theme this season and was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2009 - This season was directed by Terry Denny and our musical theme was Broadway Blockbuster. Elections were held in January. Stephen Clos was elected as President, Carroll Robb was elected as Vice President, Lisa Schenkewitz was elected as treasurer and Lynne Wood stays on as librarian.

Fall 2010 - Countdown to Christmas was our musical theme for this season and was directed by Terry Denny.

Spring 2011 - Sixties with a Twist was our musical theme and this season was directed by Terry Denny. Elections were held in January. Stephen Clos, President; Leslie Heavey, Vice President; Rosa Walsh, Treasurer; Lynne Wood, Librarian.

Spring 2012 - Magic to Do was our musical theme for this season and was directed by Terry Denny. Elections were held in January. All board positions remain the same. Stephen Clos as President, Leslie Heavey as Vice President, Rosa Walsh as Treasurer and Lynne Wood as librarian.

Fall 2012 - White Christmas was our musical theme for this season and was directed by Erik Petersen with Elizabeth Preston directing choreography. Tom Link was elected as our interim President, Tasha Dyson as our interim Vice President, Elizabeth Preston as interim Librarian, Yvonne Koch as interim Member at Large, and Rosa Walsh continued as Secretary/Treasurer.

Spring 2013 - There's No Business Like Show Business was our musical theme for this season and was directed by Erik Petersen with Elizabeth Preston directing choreography. Elections were held in January with all interim board members being elected to fill the positions: Tom Link, President; Tasha Dyson, Vice President; Rosa Walsh, Secretary/Treasurer; Elizabeth Preston, Librarian; Yvonne Koch, Member at Large.

Fall 2013 - "SparkleJollyTwinkleJingley" was our musical theme for this season and was directed by Erik Petersen with Elizabeth Preston directing choreography.

Spring 2014 - The theme for this year was "Salute to the 40's" and was directed by Erik Petersen with Elizabeth Preston directing choreography. Elections were held in January with Tasha Dyson being elected President; Tom Link, Vice President; Rosa Walsh, Secretary/Treasurer; Elizabeth Preston, Librarian; Yvonne Koch, Member at Large.

Fall 2014 - "A Trip Down Candy Cane Lane" was our musical theme for this season and was directed by Erik Petersen.

Spring 2015 - "Lost in the 50's" was our theme for this season and was directed by Erik Petersen with Elizabeth Preston directing choreography.. We sang many great songs from the 1950's that were loved by everyone at our six venues. Elections were held in January with all officers remaining in their positions with the exception of Jennifer Petersen now being our Member at Large.

Fall 2015 - "Christmas in the Movies" was the theme for our Christmas 2015 Performances and was directed by Erik Petersen with choreography directed by Elizabeth Preston.

Spring 2016 was the 25th anniversary of The Encore Singers. Our performance consisted of songs sung by the group over this 25 years. Erik Petersen was the director and Elizabeth Preston directing choreography.

Christmas 2016 saw us perform "Retro-Rocking Christmas" which had outstanding reviews from all that saw it. We performed at the Cary Tree Lighting and the Raleigh Community Christmas show in addition to some of our regular venues. The group was once again led by Erik Petersen with choreo led by Elizabeth Preston.

Our Spring 2017 season was a wonderful collection of 1960's music loved by all who saw us as well as by all the Encore Singers. Erik Petersen once again lead us in songs and Elizabeth Preston in choreo.

What a great time we had doing our Christmas 2017 shows. The title was "That's Christmas to Me", taken from the song by the same name by the Pentatonix. Erik once again directed us. Tasha Dyson, our President, took over the duties of choreo. The season was a great success.

Our Spring 2018 season covered "Hepcats to Hippies." We performed songs from the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. It was a BIG hit everywhere we performed. Erik again led the group with Tasha Dyson and Debbie Mickunas directing the choreography. Another great season of fun.

Our Christmas 2018 was titled "A Merry Merry Christmas". All shows for this season were dedicated to the memory of Mary Finnegan, one of our beloved members who passed away in August. We sang songs that she especially loved. Our director was Erik Petersen with Tasha Dyson and Debbie Mickunas choreographing for us. It was a great season.

Our Spring 2019 program was titled "91 Years of Disney". This season was directed by Lisa Schenkewicz. This was a fun season with all the Disney Music we have loved over the years.

The Christmas 2019 performance was titled "A Fun and Festive Christmas" and was directed by Lisa Schenkewicz. The choreo was led by Julie Dameron, Betsey Mead and Yvonne Koch.

We cancelled our Spring 2020 performance. We did not perform again until Christmas of 2021.

Our Christmas 2021 performance was titled a "Season of Joy" and was directed by Yvonne Koch with Betsey Mead and Julie Dameron leading choreography. We had a great season and were dubbed "The Magnificent Seven."

We did not have a performance for Spring 2022, unfortunately.

We DID have a performance for Christmas 2022 but it was a very small, brief, mobile one. We'll give you a good one for Christmas 2023!
